About Barry Daniel

I live in the Lake District in the UK where I run a guesthouse with my partner Kate and my cat Manuel. I enjoy painting, hillwalking, reading, visiting and entertaining friends, T’ai Chi and playing the guitar. I’m engaged to a certain degree in the local community, as a volunteer with Samaritans and I’m a fairly active member of the local Green party. I’ve had a relatively intuitive sense of the Middle Way most of my adult life but it found a greater articulation and a practical direction through joining the society. It’s also been interesting and great fun engaging with other people with a similar outlook. My main contribution to the society is conducting the podcast interviews, something that gives me a lot of satisfaction and that I’ve learnt a lot from.

  1. Very interesting and thought provoking discussion between Mark and Barry. I had a strong sense of ‘middle ground’ in their thinking and in their personal attunement to each other and to their respective world views. In my imagination I could visualise myself in a 5rhythm setting, and even on my own sitting in the cold kitchen get a sense of the different layers, channels and tonalities if energy in the modalities described by Mark.

Some resistance also. I rather dislike rhythmic vocal music of the genre that is so popular now, it makes me anxious. But I love classical choral music, and melodic song that is not underpinned with an insistent beat or stereotypic format.

I sometimes dance alone, not to music but just expressing something that wants to emerge and be ‘out there’, unseen.

I feél a little motivation to involve myself in an activity like this, but I am 81 and conscious of my ageing and aged body, and how the generality of people react to the older person’s physicality, often with a mixture of pity and disgust.

    Thank you both anyway.

    Pete
